Lacking a quorum at the opening of the regular June term, scheduled to convene Monday, the Crockett County Commissioners Court recessed until the end of the week when Judge Charles E. Davidson is expected to be back home and when the court will take action on the petition presented the past week asking for an election to decide whether or not beer and wines of not more than 4 percent alcoholic content may be sold in Ozona, Precinct No. 1.

All interested citizens of Crockett county are invited to meet with the Commissioners Court when it holds a conference at 3:30 Monday afternoon, June 11, with officials of the General Telephone Co. requested by the Court in an effort to learn what the company plans in the way of service to Ozona when and if the local exchange is converted to the dial system. Ranchmen of the county who are now enjoying telephone service through the local exchange are especially invited, County Judge Houston Smith said.
Citizens here are disturbed at rumors of the possibility the company will take away all operators from the local exchange if it is converted to the dial system, in which case, it is understood, present rural phone service will be impossible without expensive construction on the part of the rural users. The elimination of the human element in exchanged operation, also, community leaders fear, will cripple the Ozona system of fire protection by hampering the alarm system and notification of firemen as to the location of a blaze.

Crockett county voters turned out in record numbers last Saturday in the Democratic run-off primary to elect a woman to the office of county judge for the first time in the county’s history. Mrs. Bernice Bailey Jones, widow of former County Judge M. Brock Jones, and appointed last December to fill out his unexpired term after his sudden death from a heart attack, won the nomination by a margin of 126 votes over her run-off opponent, Troy Williams. Mrs. Jones polled a total of 650 votes to 524 for Williams.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLERS find the linotype machine fascinating as the old expert, Bekie Diaz, shows them how it works in the back of the Stockman office Thursday. Watching the almost lost art are Mary Wall, Deena Phillips, Christy Parks, Tanya Ruthardt, Katrina Burger, and Mrs. Billy Williams.
